Olivia's eyes

When I was little, I wished I had blue eyes. I always disliked my brown eyes. My sister has brown eyes, but her's have flecks of gold in them. Mine don't. They're just brown.

Olivia, like just about every other baby on the planet, was born with slatey grey eyes. I won't lie... I was very excited about that. And I was disappointed when her's turned brown. Because I was one of those people that just disses on brown eyes.

Claire has crystal blue eyes. They're gorgeous. I think Claire is well aware of her gorgeous blue eyes, and she plays it to her advantage.

But the secret of mine... I am in love with Olivia's eyes. They're so brown, so very deep and dark, that I feel like she looks straight through you...

I used to read, like all the time. And one of my favorite books was Alice by Sara Flanigan. Every once in a while, I get a moment to myself, and I typically chose to take a bath while reading old books of mine. While re-reading Alice, I came upon a passage that explains perfectly how I feel about Olivia's eyes.

Olivia

(the main character has come upon a doe giving birth to a baby) "I looked right into the eyes of the doe and my life ain't never been the same since. How can I tell you what it was like? How can you tell about the end of lightning? How can you tell about the stopping of rivers, or the turning off of the night? What's to say? Right in them big liquid, sad and wise, dark eyes was the story of Life. And the story of God, and the story of Love. I seen a picture of Jesus once. He had blue eyes and I remember thinking it just wadn't right. The eyes was blank and pale and they didn't know nothing. And right then, right there in tthem quiet woods with the gentle sounds of nature all around me, I knowed if I could paint the eyes of Jesus, they would be just like that doe's."

see I do photograph Olivia

As always, playing some catch-up, so you might (most possibly) see a surge of blogs here.

First up, Olivia! See, I do photograph her!

Alright, so clients who have had me photograph them can attest, I tend to lay on the ground when photographing people... especially kids. I just love the way a shot comes out when its on their level. Olivia is fascinated with me laying down... which leads her to hover over me as I'm photographing whatever I'm photographing. Normally, I just let her hover. This day, I photographed her hovering. I think I ended up with over 10 different shots of her hovering... this ones my favorite.

And for good measure... I've explained to a couple people that I get really excited when you can see me in the catchlights of a persons eyes. Catchlights are those pretty light sparkles in your eyes in photographs... I love them and strive to get them every shot. I tend to wear white on sessions to act like a natural reflector in hopes of getting them. But here's a close-up of this shot of Olivia... I'm right there!

man he puts up with a lot

Ok, so the reason I photographed Tim a couple days ago, was because I wanted a shot of his eyes. I love Tims eyes. Claire has Tims eyes. They change color a lot. Usually they're green, but depending on anything from his shirt to his mood, they can turn a slatey grey or even a rich blue. Tim is also incredibly blind. His prescription is so bad, he has to buy the really expensive kinds of lenses that are super incredibly easy to scratch - because the normal lenses are too heavy for frames.

I've obviously been fascinated by Tims eyes for some time... there's a framed photo in our hallway that I took of Tim when we were in college for a photography assignment... its similar to these... close up, no glasses... just eyes.

I'm also just plain eager to photograph someone other then the girls. Don't get me wrong - I love and adore them and love and adore photographing them... I just like the challenge of someone new (which, if you're reading this and thinking "Heck, I have an afternoon where I'm not doing anything and wouldn't mind blowing an hour of my time with Heather" email me! You don't have to buy a thing... trust me, it would not be wasting my time. I love the practice! Plus you'll most likely end up on the blog LOL!)

So here's a couple more from Tims modeling session. Which, by the way, he hates doing - but does it because he loves me (awwww)

the eyes are the windows to our souls

I want desperately to take photos of all these newborns who've just made appearances into the world... but so far their parents have been busy, and not been contacting me. So to pass time, I editted an old (as in January) photo I took of Claires eyes. I love her eyes.
